The holidays are busy and stressful, even in the midst of a pandemic. Loneliness might be the farthest thing from your mind. Or maybe not.
According to an AARP study 31% of people feel lonely during the holidays. Even though we live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with “connection” via social media. most of us are more isolated than ever.
Recently I got the opportunity to read The Loneliness Solution by Jack Eason. I was a little skeptical picking this up because the synopsis felt like a bit of an attack on introverted people, but boy was I wrong.
It can be a juggling act to avoid loneliness under the best of circumstances, but in the midst of a global pandemic this message is all the more timely. Even before the pandemic we were losing the art of meaningful conversation and replacing it with empty exchanges on social media. This book looks in depth at the problem, statistics, and gives step-by-step guidance on how we can fix the issue. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that casual acquaintances are actual friends when we see the minutia of their lives on Facebook, but it’s not a satisfying replacement for real friendship and connection.
This book is written from a Christian perspective and often draws from Biblical wisdom, so keep that in mind if religion isn’t your thing. It is well-written, well-researched, and held my attention all the way through. This is one of those books I’m glad I have a physical copy of so I can highlight and take notes.
