January scripture writing plan

The start of a new year often comes with pressure – new goals, fresh habits, and the quiet expectation that January should somehow fix everything.

But what if this month wasn’t about rushing forward?

What if January was about slowing down, grounding yourself in Scripture, and beginning the year with hope instead of hustle?

That’s exactly why I created this January scripture writing plan, a simple, manageable way to begin the year rooted in God’s Word, without overwhelm. I did a similar plan in December and knew right away that this was going to become a monthly habit.

What Is a January Scripture Writing Plan?

A January scripture writing plan is a daily practice where you write out one short Bible passage each day throughout the month of January.

Instead of long readings or complicated study guides, scripture writing focuses on:

  • Writing the verse by hand
  • Slowing your thoughts
  • Allowing the meaning of Scripture to settle in

This plan includes 31 short, carefully chosen verses focused on:

  • Hope
  • Trust
  • Renewal
  • Peace
  • Direction for the future

Each passage is brief enough to fit into real life, even during busy or heavy seasons.

Simple Supplies for a January Scripture Writing Plan

One of the best things about a January scripture writing plan is how accessible it is. You don’t need expensive tools, artistic skills, or a perfectly curated setup.

That said, having a few supplies you genuinely enjoy can make the practice feel more inviting and sustainable.

Essentials

These are the only things you truly need:

  • A Bible (or the YouVersion Bible app)
  • A notebook or journal dedicated to scripture writing
  • A pen you enjoy using. I take this opportunity to get some use out of my various fountain pens.

Writing by hand slows your pace and helps Scripture linger longer in your mind and heart.

Optional (But Lovely) Add-Ons

If you enjoy analog tools, you might also like:

None of these are required, they’re simply ways to make the habit feel personal and cozy.

Weekly Themes in This January Scripture Writing Plan

While the printable keeps things intentionally simple, the verses naturally fall into weekly themes that guide the month gently.

Week 1: New Beginnings & Trust

The first week focuses on releasing the past and trusting God with what’s ahead. These verses remind us that clarity often comes one step at a time, not all at once.

Week 2: Peace, Courage & Rest

As the initial excitement of the new year fades, this week speaks directly to anxiety, weariness, and fear. The focus is on finding peace and courage without striving.

Week 3: Renewal, Strength & Purpose

Mid-January is when motivation often dips. These passages emphasize daily renewal, God’s faithfulness, and purpose found in ordinary faithfulness.

Week 4: Hope, Joy & Faithful Living

This week centers on guarding your heart, walking by faith, and letting God’s peace guide daily life. Joy here is quiet, rooted, and sustaining.

Week 5: Waiting & Looking Ahead

The final days of January focus on patience and trust, reminding us that God is still working, even when answers take time.

How to Use This January Scripture Writing Plan

There’s no “right” way to do scripture writing, but here’s a simple rhythm you can follow:

  1. Sit somewhere quiet
  2. Write out the day’s verse slowly
  3. Pause and reflect on what stands out
  4. Optional: write a short prayer or thought

Some days you may write more. Some days, the verse alone is enough.

Consistency matters more than depth.

A Gentle Encouragement for the New Year

If you miss a day, simply begin again.
If January feels heavy, let Scripture meet you there.
This plan isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence.

My hope is that this January scripture writing plan becomes a quiet anchor for your days and a peaceful way to step into the year ahead.
