A Clean Kitchen And DIY Stamped Dishtowel

We moved into our current house a little over a year ago. We were fresh off of losing almost everything to a fire, and we were ready to have a home. When we turned the key for the first time we were stunned to see the condition the previous tenants had left the house in. We picked up bags full of animal hair, rat droppings, and soda cans throughout the house, but nothing compared to the filthiness that was the kitchen. We spent weeks scrubbing, cleaning, and painting the kitchen  Before it was even usable. Needless to say, keeping the kitchen clean is a big priority of mine now!

Kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most labor-intensive rooms in the house to clean, but there are a few simple tips that can make the job so much easier, and sometimes even downright enjoyable!

Use The Right Tools For The Job

Starting with the right arsenal of tools will save you a lot of frustration, and generally makes cleaning jobs a lot quicker and easier. Start by heading down to Target to stock up on a few essentials. Three of my current kitchen must-haves are the Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub sponge, Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Sponge, and the Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Soap Dispensing Dishwand. This week (8/14-8/20) is the perfect time to stock up because if you spend $50 on Household Essentials at Target, you get a $15 Target Gift Card.

Now, you don’t want to choose these sponges based on the color of your kitchen decor. The green ones are the Heavy Duty scrubbers, which are great for the kitchen, garage, and even outdoors. You can use them on pots and pans, oven racks, grill racks, tools, tires, and even sinks. The blue ones are the Non-Scratch scrubbers, and you can safely clean non-stick cookware with them! They are also great for countertops, cooktops, tub, shower, tile, windows, and even dishes. The Dishwands also come in green and blue. Use the green one on pots, pans and oven racks, and the blue one on dishes, countertops, and cooktops.

Clean Kitchen

We have an enameled cast iron sink in the kitchen, which is prone to getting black marks and scuffs from pots and pans. I have driven myself CRAZY trying to get them out with regular cleaner and a rag. Enter the Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge and some baking soda and a few drops of lemon essential oil, and viola, my sink is sparkling in minutes.

That is just BAKING SODA and essential oil! Isn’t that amazing?

before and after

I like to keep the Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Sponge near the sink, because it is my favorite tool for wiping down the countertops and around my kitchen window at night. There is nothing worse than waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes. By getting in the habit of cleaning the sink area every night, I am able to wake up to a peaceful kitchen. And, I don’t have to start my day doing dishes!

Use Fun Tools In Your Kitchen

If you genuinely LIKE your space and the things in it, you will be a lot more motivated to keep it clean! I have a great childhood memory of helping my grandma dry dishes when I was a kid. One of my favorite things were her hand-embroidered flour sack dishtowels. They were absolutely beautiful, and I can still feel them in my hands. Who could dread doing dishes with a beautiful towel? Well, this mama ain’t got time to be hand-embroidering towels, but I have found a fun, yet simple way to recreate those beautiful towels in my own kitchen.

DIY flour sack dishtowels

You can pick up a bundle of flour sack dish towels, and textile markers in Target. The textile markers are in the kids crafts section.

Take a rubber stamp (I resurrected one from my card making stash), and use the textile marker to ink the stamp. I used a wash or purple and blue to create a pretty watercolored indigo effect.

Press firmly onto the towel. Follow the care instructions on the markers.

The possibilities for beautiful hand-made towels are endless!

Another one of my favorite kitchen tools is the Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Soap Dispensing Dishwand. I load up the handle with my favorite dish liquid, and I can quickly and easily do dishes WITHOUT chipping my nails. That may seem inconsequential to some, but nothing is more frustrating than ruining a fresh manicure by washing dishes!
