In our quest to save money I have voluntary sworn off of Starbucks for a year. Its not like I was spending hundreds of dollars there, but I would reload my gold card about once a month at $25 a pop. That is several hundred dollars over the course of a year, so it had to go.
In the mornings I make my own Americano with my handy dandy coffee grinder and espresso machine, which pacifies my morning cravings, but sometimes I get sick of just drinking water the rest of the day. I am a big hot tea drinker, but thats not very refreshing. So while I was wasting hours on browsing Pinterest the other day I saw several recipes for a copycat of Starbucks’ Passion Tea Lemonade.
That definitely sounded like a drink that needed to be in my life, so I set out to perfect a recipe. I found the Tazo Passion Iced Tea Bags at Target for about $3.50 for 6 bags (each bag makes an entire pitcher). Any lemonade will do, homemade, frozen, in a jug… I opted for a 15 calorie version since I knew I would be adding sugar.
For the simple syrup just combine 1 cup of sugar and one cup of water in a saucepan, whisk until the sugar is melted. Once it cools it will thicken and viola, you have simple syrup.
Now if you really want to be cheap frugal, save the tea bags and use 2 used tea bags in place of one fresh one and get a little more life out of them.
- 1 Tazo Iced Passion Tea Bag
- 4 cups water
- 4 cups lemonade
- 1/2 cup simple syrup
- Heat 4 cups of water in tea kettle until it whistles, then pour over tea bag in pitcher. Let steep for 5 minutes, then remove bag. Add lemonade and simple syrup, then whisk together. Cool in fridge. When serving, pour over ice and shake or stir.
