I wanted to start a container garden this year to offset some of our fresh produce purchases. We have a nice balcony on our apartment, and have had success with pots of flowers in years past.

I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a container garden because I don’t know what I am doing, and my results might be a bunch of dead plants in pots. Seeds and soil can be obtained fairly cheap, but containers were going to break my budget.

I decided to get creative, and started saving cans from the bulk items we were purchasing, as well as a few small ones. I want to try to grow lettuce, maybe a tomato plant, green beans, and maybe peas..

I had some chalk paint left over from my desk project, and I purchased some gold acrylic pant for a couple of dollars. My daughter helped me paint all the cans with the teal color, which dried pretty quickly. Then we took wine corks and a pencil to stamp and decorate the cans with the gold paint.

Even a plain plastic container for planting runs $5+, so even if our pots aren’t the prettiest I am VERY satisfied with the price! I plan to drill a hole in the bottom for drainage and add a layer of rocks under the potting soil.
