This weekend my husband worked as much over time as he could get, which means he didn’t get off until midnight. I had a glass of wine, watched a little Hell’s Kitchen, and quickly fell asleep with the whole bed to myself.
A few hours later I heard my phone vibrating through my haze of sleep. I looked at the time – 1:20 AM. It was my husband calling to tell me that his car was broken down and that he had been trying to call me since midnight. Oops.
I went and picked him up and didn’t think too much of it. We would have it towed to the shop on Monday and get it fixed. My husband tried to start it up while we were there and it sounded like a transformer chewing on metal. I said, “Um, pretty sure your motor is done.”
Now, my husband isn’t a car guy AT ALL. I always tease him that he is lucky he knows how to put gas in. And I am no mechanic myself. My limited knowledge of cars comes from what has broken down on vehicles I owned in the past.
Sure enough, on Monday the shop informed us that it needed a new motor to the tune of $2,600. The car was 10 years old and we had just put over $2,000 into it a few months ago. It wasn’t worth fixing.
So we settled up with the shop, and called around to some junk yards to see what they would give us for it. We went with the highest bidder and walked away with $400. After we cancel the insurance and turn in the license plates we should have another $200.
I am extremely thankful that this happened AFTER we started homeschooling, and AFTER I became self-employed. There is no way we could have made one car work before those two things happened. We would have had to look at buying a car with payments which would strain our finances. As inconvenient as this situation is, God really is in the details.
Several people have commented to me on how stressful this situation must be. It really isn’t. Inconvenient? Yes. But we are still blessed beyond measure, and just having one car makes us some of the wealthiest people in the world!
Between God and essential oils I hope I still feel the same way after driving my husband around a few weeks from now lol.
