This year has seen a lot of changes for me, and one of the biggest has been my employment situation. A little over a year ago I became completely self-employed. I went from working 12-hour days in a corporate salon, to working part-time in a small rental shop, and supplementing my income with writing and essential oils.
I have been a hairstylist for 18 years, and while some people seem to think stylists sit around and file their nails all day, it is a very physically demanding job. Over the years I have suffered chronic tendonitis in my foot, sprains and fractures that never healed because I wasn’t able to stay off my feet, hearing loss from 18 years of a blowdryer next to my ear, and a shoulder that sounds like someone is eating Cap’n Crunch when I lift my arm. I love my clients, but doing hair on a full-time basis is not going to be sustainable for me long term, if nothing else because of the physical demands.
I have been blogging since 2008, but about 18 months ago I accidentally deleted all of my content. Awful, right? That “oops” completely changed the trajectory of my blog, and within a year I was making a part-time income off of it. My long-term goal is to rely more and more on my at-home ventures, and less and less on the salon for income.
When I was given the opportunity to review Crystal Paine’s new book, Money Making Mom, I was excited! I have followed Crystal for many years, and even had the chance to chat with her online a few times. She is one of the sweetest, most genuine people who have made it big blogging, and her success has not changed her.
Money Making Mom is a practical handbook for anyone looking to supplement their income with an at-home or self-owned business. She covers everything from the WHY of starting a business, to different business ideas, and practical advice about running a business.
She didn’t just sit down at the computer one day and crank out a successful blog. She started many, many other businesses before the blog that failed in one fashion or another, but instead of giving up, she took what she learned to be wiser in her next venture.
A few things I really loved about this book is that she has a strong moral code, and she isn’t willing to cross it for the sake of making a buck. All of her businesses have been started and ran debt-free, and she has always generously donated from her profits. She strongly encourages her readers to give, even when it cuts into their bottom line.
If you are interested in earning some extra income from home, you have to read this book! It is PACKED full of useful information, but is written is such an engaging style I flew through it in less than two days. It releases on November 3, 2015, but you can pre-order now.
Are you self-employed or making money from a home-based business? Is this a goal of yours?
