I don’t know about you, but I am really glad the election is over. My relief doesn’t stem from who won or lost, but rather the cessation of the attack ads, phone calls, and knocks on my door hounding me to vote for a certain candidate.
Politics in the United States is a dirty business. Nothing is worse than encountering a politically outspoken person who believes that they are right and everyone else is wrong, and they are prepared to argue til you see it their way.
While I was reading my Bible today I came across a familiar story. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness where he was tempted by Satan for 40 days. On their face the temptations seem really stupid – turn these rocks into bread, jump off a building – but one passage in particular really struck me.
Then the devil took Him up and revealed to Him all of the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said. “Because they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will give it all to you if you will worship me.” -Luke 4:5-7
What a minute, they are his to give to anyone he pleases? And Jesus did not correct the devil on that point. He merely said,
You must worship the Lord your God and only serve Him. -Luke 4:8
I think its often easy for us to confuse patriotism with religion. While many men of God have served this country, the Kingdom of God is not of this world. So much trust and emphasis is placed on laws, who is in office … when in the eternal sense none of it matters.
Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” -John 18:36
We are citizens of another kingdom, in another place.
What a liberating realization that the kingdoms of this earth are of little consequence.
Is it wrong to be involved in politics? No, and thats not what I am saying. But it is wrong to put this earthly kingdom ahead of our heavenly citizenship.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:19-20
Maybe its time to stop worrying about politics so much and start worrying more about the mission God has given you. Maybe its time to call you die-hard Democrat uncle, or Limbaugh-loving co-worker that you quit talking to because you couldn’t stand their politics.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. -Luke 21:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. -Matthew 6:33
