I have been a cosmetologist for 20 years and seen a lot of hair trends come and go. When I first started in the industry hair color mentioned at the post was just becoming popular, and now it seems every single person who sits in my chair has color treated hair. Summer can be rough on hair. After spending most of this one poolside, I can vouch for that! Today I am sharing a few tips on how to maintain healthy hair this summer.
I always like to snoop through the haircare aisle in Walmart just to see if there is anything new, and recently some Schwarzkopf products caught my eye. Schwarzkopf is a name I recognize from my professional career since I used their professional color line for many years, so I picked up 3 Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Hair Repair Color Guard™ products to test out.
Gliss™ Hair Repair is a line that is new here in the United States, and is scientifically designed and tested to deliver proven, measurable results in repairing hair, whether the damage is from styling, coloring, activity, or the nature of the hair itself. There were 5 varieties – Ultimate Repair, Ultimate Moisture, Oil Nutritive, Extra Volume, and Color Guard. You can learn more about the different types of product here and check them out on YouTube.
Use UV Protection
It’s no surprise that most of us get a lot more sun exposure in the summer. We lather up with sunscreen to protect our skin, but don’t forget your hair! The Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Color Guard™ Shampoo and Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Color Guard™ Conditioner both contain a UVA/UVB filter that will protect your hair from the suns rays and protect your color for up to 12 weeks.
Protect your Hair Before You Get In The Pool
The pool is the best way to beat the summer heat, but it can be extremely damaging to your hair. My best tip to protect the hair from chlorine and chemicals is to get it damp with non-chlorinated water before getting in the pool. For an extra layer of protection spray it down with a product like the Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Color Guard Express Repair Conditioner, which is a leave-in. Not only will this help to protect your hair color, it will help to seal the hair so it can’t absorb as much chlorinated water.
Shampoo and Condition ASAP
The easiest way to keep chlorine from building up in your hair is to shampoo and condition it as soon as possible after getting out of the pool. The Gliss Color Guard Shampoo and Conditioner will gently cleanse the hair and help to reconstruct and repair it with keratin, which is the building block of hair’s structure.
Don’t Put Wet Hair Up
The first thing most of us want to do straight out of the pool is throw our hair in a ponytail or messy bun. Don’t do it! Hair’s tensile strength, or ability to stretch, is at around 30% dry and 50% wet. That means wet hair is especially fragile, and as it dries and contracts it can snap if being pulled by a hair elastic.
Blondes Don’t Always Have More Fun
I get more requests for highlights in the summertime than any other season. While some dimensional color is gorgeous on almost everyone, not every head of hair can handle full blown blond highlights. If you are craving some dimension and highlights in your hair discuss how light you can go with your stylist. Summer is stressful enough on hair without lightening it past a healthy point. If you spend a lot of time in the pool, or already have some damage in your hair blond may not be for you. You can always try some rich caramel or even red pieces to accent your base color.
