I discovered a life-changing, magical Pinterest tip this week, and I just have to share it with you.
This year Thanksgiving brought ice with several inches of snow on top of it that kept us at home for the day. I had stocked up on food because I knew there was a storm coming, so we were able to enjoy a traditional meal for just us.
Since my stepsons are here every other holiday, we haven’t been able to establish a lot of family traditions. So being able to set a nice table, go around and share what we are thankful for, and enjoy eating a meal together was a rare treat. I tried to make the table pretty, and set all the food out. We just got a new table in April – it looked so nice! Until I cleaned the dishes up and discovered that cheap hot pads apparently don’t work that well, and I had marred the finish of my table.
I was bummed. This is why we can’t have nice things! Stupid cheesy hash browns. And green bean casserole. Yep, I made two marks.
I tried to cover it with placemats and table runners, but it still bothered me.
I don’t know why nearly a month elapsed before it dawned on me that there has to be a product or hack that would fix the burned finish. This is so easy, I couldn’t believe it. If you have heat marks on your wood, try this!
You need:
An iron, water, and a towel. Seriously.
If your iron has a steaming capability, add the water to your iron and set it to a steam setting. I put mine on 5. If your iron doesn’t steam, just get the towel damp and wring it out REALLY well.
Put the towel down over the heat mark and start ironing. You want to VERY slowly move the iron around over the spot. We want this to get nice and warm, but we don’t want to turn a heat mark into a burn mark.
If your iron has a steam button, make sure you are pushing it. Lift the towel frequently and check to see how it is looking. Within seconds, the heat mark on my table was disappearing.
I am blown away that it immediately disappeared – and has stayed gone!
I took a picture by the scratch so you could see it IS the same spot on the table. Now I need to Old English the scratch, and my table will look new again.
Do you have any heat marks on your wood? Try this fix, I want to hear how it works!

It worked for us. The finish is still rough, but the white is gone. Thanks!
