Cleaning can feel like an all-or-nothing undertaking. I think most people fit into one of two camps. The first camp believes that good moms have sticky floors, and that a clean house ranks pretty low on the important scale of life. The second doesn’t allow the kids to eat food that might get their clothes dirty, and probably misses out on a lot of life because it tends to get messy.
I’m not here to tell anyone they are wrong, but I have my own opinion on the matter. Finding a healthy cleaning balance will not only make your home an orderly, inviting place, it will allow life to still happen in your home without freaking out every time someone squeezes a juice box too hard. Whatever you do, do it heartily as unto the Lord, and not to men. Colossians 3:23
As a wife and mother, I try to remind myself that it is a privilege to take care of my household. God has blessed us with a home, ample possessions, and I am being a good steward of those blessings by taking care of them. Sometimes it’s tempting to be resentful – “I’m not the maid!” Which – I’m not the maid – but, I am working for the Lord, and I am pretty sure I would gladly put his plate in the dishwasher.
Then there is the other extreme – placing the cleanliness of your house above the needs of your family. I have to say, I meet a LOT more moms in the first category, there are definitely those who have allowed a clean and orderly house to become an idol.
Are you picking up what I am putting down? BALANCE. Get yourself a routine, serve your family and keep that house clean, but let your kids be kids. They don’t need to have mountains of toys, and I daresay its better if they don’t, but things will get messy sometimes.
P.S. Today was my birthday, and I didn’t clean a darn thing!
