Every year we try to simplify Christmas and move away from the materialism and establish traditions that teach our kids the true meaning of the celebration. That can be difficult to do when they are constantly bombarded by commercials, catalogs, and even well-meaning friends who grill them on what they “asked for from Santa.”
This year I was looking into advent calendars, or some way to incorporate the story of Jesus’ birth into our Christmas preparation, so I was thrilled when I came across the family Christmas devotional Good News of Great Joy! from Thriving Home.
This devotional is geared towards kids ages 2-11, but my 13-year-old daughter is already excited about doing some of the activities. It is a once-weekly devotional, which is a HUGE plus for me. I have often started family devotional plans with the best of intentions, but trying to get all 5 of us in the same place every single day is overwhelming, and often impossible. Without fail we fall behind, miss days, and eventually get discouraged and quit. We are planning to set aside an hour every Sunday afternoon to do this devotional as a family.
There are 4 devotions, one for each week, that each contain a scripture passage, time for prayer, and then a “discuss and do” section with discussion questions, and really fun activities to get everyone involved. The activities are grouped for suggested age groups, but most are appropriate for all ages. One of my favorites is the “Salvation Army road trip” where you gather all the spare change you have, and then drive around town depositing it in Salvation Army kettles! My kids LOVE putting money in the kettles and interacting with the bell ringers.
This devotional is a digital download that you can print yourself, or just access from your computer or tablet. I printed mine at 70% size, because I feel like everything I own should be able to fit in my Erin Condren planner. If you think this would be a goof fit for your family the devotional is on sale right now for $3.99 in the Thriving Home store. I will be posting about this through the month of December, so I would love for you to join along!
In honor of beginning our new family tradition, I am giving away a free copy of Good News of Great Joy! The giveaway is open for entries through November 30, so please enter and share with anyone you think might be interested!
