I do not have an innate knack for decorating, but I can definitely appreciate a well-designed and put-together home. I have been slowly working on putting our apartment together one room at a time, in hopes that when its is time for us to buy our first home, we will have enough things to furnish it nicely.
I recently asked for advice on how to arrange my living room furniture on a Facebook frugal decorating group. My sensitive psyche was on prepared for the onslaught of opinions (I’m mostly joking), but a few comments that really made me chuckle went something like this:
“Get rid of some of those books, and style your bookshelf.”
I don’t know about you, but I am one of those people who actually uses their bookshelf to … well, store books. I have often admired the beautiful arrangements of knick knacks and flowers on bookshelves I see in magazines and on Pinterest, but that just isn’t practical for me. We have a limited amount of space, and apparently too many books.
So since the bookshelf is in our living room and in plain sight of all of our visitors I compromised between form and function. You won’t see it gracing the pages of a design magazine, but it prettied up the shelf a bit. Here is the before and after:
As I am fond of saying, if someone doesn’t like it, they don’t need to come to my house. 😉
