Compassion is a core value of mine, and I try hard to teach my kids to value it as well. What does compassion really mean? Feeling what others feel, and wanting to help them overcome their circumstance.
There is a lot of suffering in the world, and it can seem overwhelming. The saying goes, one person can’t change the world, but you can change the world for one person. And the thing is, there are a lot of incredibly easy ways to make an impact.
My family has sponsored 3 kids through Compassion International for the past 5 years. For less than the price of a latte a day, sponsorship ensures that these kids get an education, healthcare, food, and whatever support they need. I have also become a local advocate for Compassion, which means that I have volunteered at a lot of different events from concerts to leadership conferences, and helped to educated people on child sponsorship. This has been a GREAT way to teach our kids about living with compassion, and given them faces to a very big problem.
Shopping for a cause
There are tons of different companies that donate a portion of their proceeds to charity. Most of these items you would purchase anyway, so why not support brands who are giving back and making a difference? Even the vitamins you choose can have a global impact.
Going to the store and buying vitamins is something we all take for granted. But people in developing countries don’t have access to vitamins, let alone a nutritious diet. When you buy Centrum Vitamins at Walgreens they will donate 1% back to their Vitamin Angels program. Vitamin Angels has been providing vitamins and minerals to at-risk populations (pregnant women, new mothers, and children under 5) for over 20 years. They are a non-profit organization, and in 2014 they provided vitamins and minerals to over 40 million children in 45 countries. In 2015 they plan to distribute over 300 million vitamins. Wow!
To make it even easier to shop for a cause, when you spend $30 or more on qualifying Centrum products at Walgreens, you’ll receive 10,000 Bonus Reward Points! We really like the Centrum Multi Gummies for Adults, but check out the selection and choose one that suits your needs here.
Showing Compassion Through Kindness
One of the easiest ways that any of us can show compassion, is by just being kind to those around us. Hold the door for someone at the store, be nice to the customer service representative on the phone, bake some cookies for your elderly neighbor. It’s not that hard to be nice, and it can have an incredible impact on someone else. One day I went through the drive through at my bank to deposit a check. The line wasn’t that long, but it was at least 20 minutes until it was finally my turn. I was a little bit irritated at this point, but I didn’t have anywhere to be, so I decided to not indulge in negative emotions. When the teller profusely apologized for the wait, I told him it was no big deal. He almost had tears in his eyes and thanked me for my patience and kind words. “I’m new and I have been getting yelled at all day!” It is humbling how easy it was to turn his bad day around, just by being kind!
This definitely isn’t an exhaustive list of the ways you can start to show compassion, but I hope it gives you a jump start to start saving the world one person at a time.
