I’m not a great artist, but I am a serious doodler. If I am sitting in a meeting, or at a class and have pen and paper in hand, I am probably doodling all over the paper. Probably flowers. That’s about all I can draw.
Earlier this year a sweet friend gifted my daughter and me each with a journaling Bible. I was too paralyzed to journal in it, because I didn’t want to mess it up. Sure, I love being creative, but that doesn’t mean I am good at it.
In the striving for perfection, I missed the real point. Bible journaling isn’t about having perfectly illustrated pages that show art created from a place of pride. It is about contemplating on the words, and worshiping through our creativity. If you have held back on worshiping through your creativity because you aren’t the greatest artist, stop it! Start doodling in the margins, and give yourself grace for the mistakes.
Recently I received a new ESV Journaling Bible, and was inspired to delve into Bible journaling again. This Bible is so pretty! It has a lot of features that may be familiar to veteran Bible journals – cream colored pages, 2″ ruled margins, and black-letter text, but what makes this Bible unique is the beautiful fabric cover. If you are new to Bible journaling, this is a great one to start with.
I have written about Bible Journaling before, and shared a few tips and techniques, but today I am going to share a few more. There are some extremely talented artists that Bible journal, and looking at their beautiful work can be intimidating. Don’t think that you have to create masterful works of art to Bible journal! You can just take notes, add some doodles, use stickers, paint … the possibilities are endless.
This is one of my favorite verses, and I used a Copic Multiliner pen, a Staedtler pen, and some cheapie colored pencils of my daughters! I used a leaf off of our maple tree and placed it under the page, then did a rubbing with the colored pencil. It’s not perfect, and it’s not a masterpiece, but I had a lot of fun making it. Lighten up a little!
I love hand-lettering, and am slowly but surely teaching myself some tricks. This page is simple lettering, done with a Micron .05 pen, stickers, and some washi tape!
If you have a creative bent and are looking for a way to incorporate more scripture into your life, this may be a great fit for you. I find Bible Journaling to be relaxing and rewarding, plus I get to play with a lot of fun art supplies! You can buy one on Amazon, or I have an extra copy that I am giving away!
